About The Position

The Yard Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers, containers, and equipment within the yard, terminal, and facility property. This position supports daily transportation and warehouse operations by positioning equipment for loading and unloading, maintaining yard organization, and ensuring equipment readiness. The Yard Driver follows company safety standards, DOT regulations (as applicable), and site-specific procedures to support on-time freight movement and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Previous yard driver, hostler, shuttler, warehouse, or transportation experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience operating a yard tractor, terminal tractor, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain company yard certification and safety training.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL may be required depending on location or customer site.
  • Basic understanding of trailer types, coupling/uncoupling procedures, and dock operations preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to procedures

Responsibilities

  • Move trailers, containers, and equipment to and from loading docks, staging areas, and parking locations within the yard.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard tractors, trailers, and equipment and report defects or damage.
  • Ensure trailers are properly secured, chocked, sealed, and docked according to safety procedures.
  • Coordinate with dispatch, warehouse staff, and operations personnel to prioritize trailer moves and dock assignments.
  • Maintain accurate yard location tracking using yard management systems (YMS), tablets, handheld devices, or written logs.
  • Verify trailer numbers, seals, and load documentation prior to movement.
  • Assist in yard organization, including staging empty and loaded trailers in designated areas.
  • Monitor yard conditions and immediately report safety hazards, equipment issues, or security concerns.
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of assigned yard tractor and equipment.
  • Comply with company policies, OSHA safety standards, and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Support shipping and receiving operations during peak periods as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.

  • Local drivers start at $20.00 - $22.00 an hour, plus a $2.00/hour shift differential for overnight shifts. (based on experience)
