About The Position

The yard driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trucks, trailers, and other vehicles within a designated yard or facility. They ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the timely positioning of vehicles for loading, unloading, and transportation operations. They leverage their experience as a driver to optimize shipping within the warehouse. This position is expected to be the yard driver and participate in warehouse operations. The yard driver plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient operation of transportation yards and facilities. By safely and effectively maneuvering vehicles, maintaining clear communication, and adhering to safety protocols, they contribute to the smooth flow of goods and materials through the supply chain.

Requirements

  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, if required.
  • Previous experience operating yard trucks or similar equipment preferred.
  • Good driving record with no history of accidents or violations.
  • Ability to maneuver vehicles safely in tight spaces and congested areas.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including sitting for extended periods, bending, lifting, and operating controls.
  • Previous experience operating yard trucks or similar equipment preferred.
  • GED or High School Diploma
  • CDL and Electric Pallet Rider experience REQUIRED.

Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Movement: Safely operate yard trucks, also known as terminal tractors or spotter trucks, to move trailers and containers within the yard.
  • Spotting: Position trailers at loading docks or designated storage areas according to schedule and operational requirements.
  • Inspection: Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard trucks and trailers to ensure they are in proper working condition and report any maintenance issues promptly.
  • Safety: Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations while operating yard equipment and working in the yard environment. This includes proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to traffic rules.
  • Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with yard supervisors, truck drivers, and other personnel to coordinate vehicle movements and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Documentation: Accurately record and document trailer movements, inspections, and any incidents or damages that occur during operations.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist with basic maintenance tasks for yard equipment, such as fueling, greasing, and minor repairs, or report maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Yard Organization: Assist in organizing and maintaining the yard layout to optimize space utilization and facilitate efficient operations.
