Position Overview The Yard Driver is responsive to the customer and local Lead/Supervisor regarding the movement and spotting of trailers to facilitate the needs of the warehouse in sorting and processing material for shipment or storage. The Yard Driver is responsible for timely movements and thorough knowledge of on-hand inventory and positioning. Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities ● Movement and spotting of trailers in a safe, efficient, timely and legal manner. ● Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles. ● Operate equipment, such as truck cab computers, CB radios, phones, or global positioning systems (GPS) equipment to exchange necessary information with bases, supervisors, or other drivers. ● Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned. ● Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as adding oil, fuel, or radiator fluid, performing minor repairs, and/or washing trucks. ● Collect delivery instructions from appropriate sources, verifying instructions and routes. ● Hook and unhook trailers; Secure cargo for transport – using ropes, bocks, chain, binders, or covers. Wrap and secure goods using pads, packing paper, containers, or straps. ● Give directions to laborers who are packing goods and moving them onto trailers. ● Operate idle reduction systems or auxiliary power systems to generate power from alternative sources, such as fuel cells, to reduce idling time, to heat or cool truck cabins, or to provide power for other equipment. ● Install or remove special equipment, such as tire chains, grader blades, plow blades, or sanders. ● Follow special cargo-related procedures. ● Load and unload trailers and perform lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying freight with loading related equipment or other equipment as necessary. ● Remove debris from loaded trailers. ● Inventory and inspect goods to be moved to determine quantities and conditions. ● Complete all necessary paperwork and maintain records required under state and federal laws and regulations. ● Check all load-related documentation for completeness and accuracy. ● Ensure that all operations are in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. ● Follow appropriate safety procedures. ● Represent the Company and the trucking industry in a professional manner. ● Perform other related job duties as assigned or required.
