About The Position

A Yard/Delivery Driver in a lumber yard is a hybrid responsible for both the physical organization of the yard and the safe transportation of materials to customer job sites. This position ensures that the correct products are loaded, secured, and delivered on time, while also supporting daily yard operations when not on the road.

Requirements

  • A valid driver's license is mandatory. Depending on the truck size, a Class A or B CDL may be required. Some employers may also require a DOT Medical Health Card.
  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment, specifically forklifts, to move oversized lumber units.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (frequently 75–100 lbs ) and work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
  • Basic familiarity with lumber species, grades, and building products to ensure order accuracy during loading.

Responsibilities

  • Transport building materials-such as lumber, roofing, and siding-to residential and commercial job sites. This includes following designated routes, using digital navigation, and obtaining customer signatures upon arrival.
  • Verify that every item and quantity on the delivery ticket matches the physical load. Secure materials using straps, tarps, or chains to prevent shifting or damage during transit in compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections (checking tires, fluids, and lights) and report any mechanical issues to supervisors immediately.
  • Assist with pulling orders, loading customer vehicles, and unloading incoming vendor shipments using forklifts or pallet jacks.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard by restacking materials, removing debris, and assisting with regular inventory cycle counts.
