The Mammography Technologists are to perform quality mammograms under the direction of the Radiologist, Director of Radiology, Supervising Mammography Radiologist, Supervising Mammography Technologist, will adhere to the American College of Radiology specifications and guidelines as required by the Food and Drug Administration. Must be able to lift patients, push equipment, and work under stress, make independent judgments, and deal professionally with others. They are responsible for assuring that services are provided in a manner that is consistent with the Ohio County Hospital policies and procedures and the purpose, vision and values. Adheres to legal compliance and other regulatory policies. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Radiology, CT scan, MRI, Ultrasound, DEXA, Mammography, and Nuclear Medicine. Consistently standing on feet, frequently bending, stooping, lifting, pulling heavy objects, and pushing heavy equipment is required. Will be required to provide direct patient care, which requires both fine and gross motor skills. Subject to the hazard of contact with patients with communicable diseases and combative patients. Frequent exposure to blood borne pathogens is possible. Occasional exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals is possible. Must be able to take call, work holidays, and accept various shift assignments as needed. Must be able to occasionally work on routine scheduled days off during vacations, sick, and other times of short staffing. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Acceptable pre-employment health screening. Must be able to hear well enough to conduct a proper patient assessment (blood pressures, breath sounds, etc.) POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES: Communications. Skills/Knowledge Quality Control and Improvement Equipment Maintenance and Safety Patient Care/Satisfaction PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Communications Keeps Radiology Manager/Supervisor informed on matters which are of importance to the well being of the Radiology Department, (safety, morale, work methods, equipment, procedures, staffing, transfers, etc.). Expected to attend 75% of the department staff meetings through out the year and initial and date staff meeting minutes. Attends 100% of all mandatory meetings unless approved by Manager/Supervisor in advance. Attend 100% of mandatory hospital and department in-services. If not in attendance is responsible for obtaining information. Regularly reviews posted memos, notes, and in-services and signs forms promptly. Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA policies. Establish a good rapport with physicians, other hospital departments, out-patient physician office staff, physicians and has a good working relationship with radiology co-workers. Informs Radiology Manager/Supervisor of actual or anticipated problems to include staffing, equipment performance, quality control issues, and patient related problems. Listens attentively and requests clarification and/or feedback as indicated. Supervises radiology assistant and radiology students. If requested, will perform supervising and other reasonable management duties in the absence of primary supervisor. Will communicate any competency or proficiency needs to department manager and take the initiative to obtain additional training, on days off if necessary. Demonstrates a cooperative attitude when interacting with others, tactful, maintains composure and is diplomatic in all situations. Treats all hospital associates, patients, and visitors with courtesy and respect. Shows enthusiasm for the job and supports the hospital’s purpose, vision, and values. Demonstrates reliability and dependability in attendance and punctuality according to the hospital polices/procedures. Will communicate all equipment errors/mal-functions immediately to Manager/Supervisor and contact service ASAP. Always informs Director of delays in repairs. Consults with radiologist regarding important patient information i.e., history/labs/most specific test for diagnosis, any other information that would contribute to a safe procedure and optimal report. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members. Skills/knowledge Demonstrates solid understanding of all Mammography equipment and its functionality. Demonstrates the ability to obtain all Mammography procedures accurately and follow set protocols. Possesses the ability to obtain all standard views s well as, all specialty views, (Cranial caudad, MLO, lateral, spot compression, and magnification views, and needle localization) Possesses the ability to image implant patients properly. Understands the methodology of positioning these patients. Demonstrates a solid understanding of all Mammography equipment and its functionality. Consistently practices and puts Patient Safety as top priority. Assures proper patient identification before performing any Mammography procedures by following departmental ID policy. Informs and educates the patient and family regarding the mammography procedure and documents this on the mammography worksheet. Ascertains patient and families understanding level before proceeding with the procedure. Informs the radiologist of all pertinent patient information before and after each procedure. Demonstrates competency in Infection Control. Carefully washes hands before and after each patient. Cleans mammography tray and accessories after each patient. Positions and drapes each patient appropriately, protecting patient’s right to privacy at all times. Reviews each examination for technical accuracy and appropriate positioning before presenting to the radiologist for review and interpretation. Carefully documents and communicates to the radiologist all pertinent patient/clinical information. Assure patient history form is completed. Obtains previous images for comparison purposes. Assures all appropriate paperwork is available and previous exams are imported into PACS, prior to dictation. Demonstrates competency with appropriate documentation within the patient chart. Follows hospital/departmental policies when documenting within the chart. Records the procedure as completed and other pertinent information to the persons responsible for the care of the patient following the procedure, i.e. “hand off” policy. Provide general and radiation safety for patients, fellow employees and self, in accordance with hospital and department standards. Follows radiation safety guidelines (ALARA), properly shields patients, and consistently wears film badge device. Always checks LMP prior to procedure for all women of childbearing age. Wears ID badge at all times on duty. Repeat film rate due to improper positioning, technical factors, or motion. Exceeds standards: less than 2% Generally, exceeds standard: 2-5% Meets standard: 5% or less. Will maintain continuing education as required by the State of Kentucky, A.R.R.T., and FDA. Reviews order, patients’ chart and any other pertinent information before proceeding with the procedure. The attending technologist will check with the radiologist or attending physician if further clarification is needed. Demonstrates competency with the Hospital Information System (CPSI) and Picture Archieve Communications System (PACS). Meticulously records all pertinent patient/procedure information within CPSI and starts/completes each procedure as required before sending to the PACS for radiologist review, interpretation, and storage. Will maintain Mammography continuing education as required by the ACR/FDA. Maintains inventory to ensure proper quantity of supplies are kept within the mammography room. Consistently secures all cabinets and supply doors. Assures all medications/contrast are in date and kept secure at all times. Keeps work area neat and clean. Assesses work area environment for any patient/visitor/employee safety hazards. Reports all safety issues to manager immediately. Participates and assures a “TIME OUT” is completed before starting any invasive mammography procedure. Correct patient, correct site marking; etc. Assures appropriate consent is obtained prior to starting procedure. Follows proper sterile and aseptic technique for all invasive breast procedures. Assures all needed supplies and equipment is readily available before starting the procedure. Assures of proper labeling of all items on the sterile tray before proceeding. Demonstrates competency in all Q.C. Completes all daily, monthly, annually, QC records correctly, assuring meticulous records/documentation is kept. Quality control and improvement Performs assigned quality control duties accurately/completely, and documents the findings prior to imaging a patient. Will accept various quality control duties as assigned by the Manager and supervising mammography quality control technologist Will participate in Performance improvement efforts in the department and hospital. Will attend all mammography staff meetings annually. Educate the patients on Breast Cancer Awareness Prevention by offering various educational material, participate in Health Fairs, or other public opportunities to educate. Reviews Mammography policy/procedure manual annually. May be requested to be member of QI team. Equipment maintenance and safety Proper use and care of mammography equipment and its components. Immediately identifies equipment errors/mal-functions to supervisor/manager immediately and notifies service vendor. Demonstrates knowledge of service numbers and procedure for calling service. Assures proper equipment function prior to performing a mammography Patient care Interprets and enforces current standards of practices, policies, and procedures at Ohio County Hospital. Interprets and enforces all hospital wide policies and procedures to include Infection and Exposure Plans, Safety and Disaster Plan, Personnel Policies, and Employee Health Policies. Participates in Ohio County Hospital's Performance Improvement efforts by actively participating in data collection analysis of findings, identification of opportunities for improvement. Transports patient to and from department in accordance with hospital and department safety standards. (Returns patient to their bed in a neat and orderly manner). Signs patients in and out at nurse’s station and brings chart to department. Returns patient to room, records procedure as completed on chart, and performs a “HAND OFF” of patient information to nursing staff, documenting “HAND OFF” on chart. Make sure the patient is covered with a sheet during transportation, and place a sheet or towel in the wheelchair seat. Provides a warm atmosphere and pleasant attitude toward the mammogram patient. Provides a private/confidential environment. Never leave a biopsy patient unattended once the biopsy has started. Always have the patient identify when compression is no longer tolerable. Explains procedure to the patient and family prior to the procedure and documents this on mammography worksheet. Always confirms correct side with the patient and clarifies with ordering physician if necessary. Uses key words at key times by following departmental script for introducing self and providing other key information. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide mammography services to patients served in relation to growth/development over the life-span, and identify their requirements relative to age-specific needs. (Assists elderly, extra time/precautions when positioning and transporting. All patients 17 years or younger must have a parent or guardian signed consent for contrast, invasive procedure, refusal, etc; unless emancipated minor. Pregnancy status must be obtained on all women of child bearing age. Check date of last menstrual period. Follows Breast Localization policy and completes Breast Localization checklist prior to all localizations
