About The Position

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, under close supervision, assists in the operation of the wastewater treatment plant. This is accomplished by working an assigned shift at the plant; learning from other operators about plant equipment and/or processes and assisting with monitoring equipment and processes for proper operations. Other duties include following all safety rules and protocols; maintaining records; and making rounds of the specific process or processes assigned. Pay ranges and qualifications are listed below for all levels of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's License and maintain a safe driving history.
  • For WWTP Operator I: High School Diploma or GED, no required experience, NC Grade I Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • For WWTP Operator II: High School Diploma or GED, six months of experience at a Grade II or higher biological water pollution control system, NC Grade II Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator certification.
  • For WWTP Operator III: High School Diploma or GED, two years of experience at a Grade II or higher biological water pollution control system, certification as a Grade III Biological Water Pollution Control System Operator.
  • For WWTP Operator IV: High School Diploma or GED, three years of experience at a Grade III or higher biological water pollution control system, certification as a NC Biological Water Pollution Control System Grade IV Operator.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with process control activities by collecting, testing, and analyzing process control samples.
  • Analyze biological bacteria and conduct settle-ability tests.
  • Collect composite samples and monitor sludge blanket levels.
  • Use automatic samplers for permit compliance and run additional tests as needed.
  • Monitor SCADA computer workstations for plant equipment and process conditions.
  • Maintain flows and loading by continuously monitoring various process indicators.
  • Inspect a wide range of wastewater equipment for noise, vibration, and abnormal operating characteristics.
  • Perform minor maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Adjust flows and chemical feed rates, and complete rounds recording operational data.
  • Brief other operators at shift change and assist maintenance staff with equipment shutdown and startup.
  • Read and study plant O&M manuals and SOPs, and participate in hands-on training.
  • Maintain daily log entries and complete required housekeeping tasks.
