About The Position

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION: To assist students across all colleges and courses with writing and reading skills, to assist professors by meeting with students for registered assignments and giving classroom presentations about the Writing Center/particular writing skills, to help retain students who are struggling academically or are in need of community, and to develop transferable skills tutors can apply to their future studies and careers. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Because tutees have varying needs and assignments, tutors must be agile: switching up communication style where needed; balancing the tutee's specified needs alongside the assignment's requirements; assisting students with different learning styles, cultural backgrounds, native languages, and accommodations; and ensuring that the tutee is developing skills to strengthen their own work.

Requirements

  • Writing Center Tutors must have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of English grammar rules/conventions
  • Knowledge of current writing theories, genres, and strategies
  • The ability to work without direct supervision
  • The ability to work well with peers, faculty, and staff
  • This position is for current WNE students.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior tutoring experience is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Meet one-on-one with tutees to work on writing and reading assignments in any subject at any stage in the drafting process
  • Keep track of scheduled appointments through Outlook calendar
  • Submit appointment forms after sessions are complete
  • Schedule appointments via email and in-person
  • Handle walk-ins
  • Keep track of and contact "no shows,"
  • Attend meetings and professional development trainings
  • Act as "the face" of the Writing Center in the lobby while fielding questions and signing in tutees
  • Work as part of a team and independently
  • Tutors who are assigned virtual hours will work with students via Zoom, the using shared screen function and/or Google Docs/OneDrive to collaborate with tutee.
  • Tutors who are promoted to Head Tutor positions will distribute appointment forms to to faculty, keep track of appointment and course data, and maintain Writing Center email, calendar, Groupme, and Zoom meeting materials.
