The George Bennett Fellowship at Phillips Exeter Academy is designed to provide a unique opportunity for a writer to focus on their craft without the distractions of financial concerns. The fellowship offers a stipend of $18,250, which may be subject to annual increases, along with housing and meals. The selected Writer-in-Residence will be expected to live in Exeter and dedicate their time to their own literary projects while also engaging informally with students interested in writing, particularly those in English classes and literary organizations. This role is not just about personal writing; it involves a commitment to fostering a creative environment for students, sharing insights, and providing mentorship in an unofficial capacity. During the fellowship, the writer is prohibited from holding any other full- or part-time job and cannot be enrolled in any degree program. This ensures that the fellow can fully immerse themselves in their writing and the community at Phillips Exeter Academy. The fellowship is open to writers of various genres, including fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry, and drama, although preference is given to fiction writers. The selection process emphasizes the quality and originality of the submitted manuscript, as well as the personal qualities of the applicant, such as dedication to the craft and the ability to adapt to the boarding school environment. The fellowship is held for the academic year, from September to June, during which the writer must be in residence whenever the Academy is in session. The Academy will provide suitable housing, and the writer and their family can enjoy meals at the Academy dining hall at no cost while school is in session. The goal is for the writer to complete their manuscript during their time at Exeter and submit it for publication upon the fellowship's conclusion.
