About The Position

theSkimm, a part of Everyday Health Consumer, is hiring a Writer, Culture & Leisure, to write our Weekend Skimm newsletters: Weekend Non-Negotiables; Eat. Read. Go; and From the Group Chat. Our team is made up of collaborative, unique, kind, inclusive individuals who bring their best to work every day. As a mission-driven brand, we provide intimacy at scale and have the unique ability to assess what our audience needs to know vs. chasing what every other brand is covering. We have a lot of creative freedom and understanding of our audience, and we work together to deliver practical, accurate, accessible content to help our readers move confidently throughout their day. The Writer, Culture & Leisure, should be a self-described culture junkie who can write our Weekend Skimm newsletters. We’re looking for someone who’s got a finger on the pulse of what’s being talked about online, and has an eye for lifestyle hacks to improve our readers’ leisure time. You’ll cover everything from pop culture and celebrity news to internet trends to entertainment releases to food to travel. You should also have demonstrated talent in and love of writing, curating, and editing, and be a thoughtful and detailed-obsessed line-editor who deeply understands theSkimm’s voice. You’ll report to the Senior Editor, Weekend Skimm and work collaboratively with the entire content team at theSkimm.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree
  • 4+ yrs experience in journalism, with experience specifically covering culture and lifestyle beats
  • Experience working in a newsroom
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and the ability to find unique approaches and angles to news and entertainment stories
  • Strong understanding of theSkimm's sensibility, tone, and audience
  • Highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Clear communication skills, and an ability to respond quickly to change
  • Strong journalistic judgment with a specific eye for fact-checking standards
  • Comfort working independently, as well as in collaboration with the Senior Editor and other team members

  • Multiple years writing about lifestyle and culture, with a distinct voice and point of view
  • Editing experience

Responsibilities

  • Pitch complete lineups for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s newsletters
  • Book and interview talent for the newsletters
  • Write complete drafts for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s newsletters, and work with the Senior Editor to incorporate feedback
  • Manage newsletter production process, from ideation to final upload
  • Pre-write for holiday newsletter editions
