About The Position

WRAL News, a leader in award-winning journalism, is seeking a meteorologist to forecast and weather on all WRAL platforms. The successful candidate has a strong background in meteorology, excellent communication skills, and the ability to present weather forecasts in a clear, engaging, and informative manner. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing weather data, creating weather graphics, and delivering accurate and timely weather forecasts to our viewers on television, digital platforms, 24/7 streaming and FAST channels, radio, and other emerging WRAL platforms.

Requirements

  • A four-year college degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or related field.
  • At least three years television experience.
  • AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation (or combination of AMS/NWA seal and education for AMS CBM designation).
  • Exceptional forecasting, communication and presentation skills as demonstrated through reel or video link(s).
  • High level of computer literacy required; knowledge of weather and newsroom computer systems a must.
  • Demonstrated web and social media proficiency.
  • Experience with dual-pol Doppler radar, WSI graphics and Baron Lync highly preferred.
  • Outstanding writing skills for digital/online, social media and broadcast platforms.
  • Knowledge/experience with broadcast quality camera equipment helpful.
  • Must be comfortable in a deadline driven, fast-paced news environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze weather data from various sources, including satellite imagery, radar, and computer models, to develop accurate and reliable weather forecasts.
  • Present weather forecasts live on-air in a clear, engaging, and professional manner.
  • Create and update weather graphics using weather software and tools.
  • Provide extensive coverage during severe weather events, including tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and other extreme weather conditions.
  • Engage with the community through social media, station events, and public appearances.
  • Work closely with news producers, reporters, and other newsroom staff to integrate weather information into newscasts.
  • Produce weather content for the station's website and social media platforms.
  • Own weather content on WRAL News+, FAST channels, and future emerging platforms.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in meteorology, weather forecasting tools, and presentation techniques.
