About The Position

Our Staff Counsel team is currently seeking a Workers’ Compensation Defense Attorney who resides in California. This position is remote based or hybrid depending on candidates location. In-person Board appearances required as necessary. Position Overview: Our California Staff Counsel group is seeking an experienced attorney to defend Hanover-insureds in workers compensation matters. You will manage your own caseload from initial investigation through conclusion, whether by settlement, dismissal, or trial. You’ll partner closely with claims professionals to resolve matters efficiently and strategically. This role offers a high level of autonomy, a steady workflow, meaningful litigation experience, and the support of a collaborative team environment. While the position is based in our Glendale, CA office, we support in-office, hybrid, and fully remote work arrangements for California-licensed attorneys.

Requirements

  • Active license to practice law in California.
  • Minimum 4 years of litigation experience.
  • Strong command of California procedural and substantive law, including WCAB rules, procedures, and decorum.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to clearly explain legal concepts to non‑lawyers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while at the same time working collaboratively with attorneys, support staff, and claims personnel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Effective organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage deadlines and manage a caseload effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of Workers’ Compensation matters from start to finish.
  • Meet and communicate regularly with claims professionals to evaluate cases and pursue cost‑effective resolutions.
  • Develop legal theories, draft responsive pleadings, and assert affirmative defenses.
  • Conduct routine motion practice, discovery, depositions, and legal research.
  • Work closely with in-office Lien Specialists to bring complete resolution to litigated matters.
  • Handle hearings, conferences, and trials before the WCAB.
  • Travel to board locations as required.
