About The Position

SMART is an early literacy program that helps pre-kindergarten through third grade students in low-income schools learn to read. The SMART Reader Work Study student works with children and their teachers to develop reading/literacy skills. SMART helps provide students with the early literacy foundation they need to succeed in school and later in life.

Requirements

  • Must maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits at LBCC
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout each term
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better
  • Have financial aid in place to be eligible to work in a Work Study student employee capacity at Linn-Benton Community College
  • Must pass a fingerprint background check with Oregon's Central Background Registry (CBR)

  • Proficient level of reading
  • Ability to effectively relate and work well with young children
  • Belief that all children can learn the fundamental skills to be a reader

Responsibilities

  • Building relationships with young children to build a love of reading
  • Read to and with PCDC students; modeling the enjoyment of reading
  • Select appropriate books with PCDC students
  • Complete daily activity logs
  • Assisting Supervisor/Back up Supervisor when needed
