About The Position

The Work Release Officer is responsible for supervising and monitoring the daily activities of work release inmates, ensuring compliance with work schedules and sentence conditions. This part-time role involves transporting inmates to their places of employment, conducting intake processes, and generating reports on inmate performance. The officer also performs administrative tasks and may appear in court to provide documentation and testimony regarding inmate behavior and compliance.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in criminal justice, corrections, behavioral science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission certification is required.
  • Basic knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure.
  • Knowledge of community-based programs and institutional correctional facilities.
  • Skill in interviewing and counseling inmates.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to supervise inmates fairly and consistently.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directives.
  • Skill in driving a multi-passenger vehicle and operating a two-way radio.
  • Skill in the safe handling and use of firearms.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in corrections or criminal justice field.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and monitor daily activities of work release inmates.
  • Transport inmates to and from their place of employment and other approved locations.
  • Conduct initial intake and processing of assigned inmates, explaining program rules and sentence conditions.
  • Coordinate with employers and departmental employment coordinators to secure and maintain employment for assigned inmates.
  • Evaluate working hours, weekly schedules, pay scales, and transportation needs for assigned inmates.
  • Maintain logs of inmate movements in and out of the jail annex facility.
  • Conduct employer phone contacts, time card verifications, and payroll record checks.
  • Counsel inmates regarding performance deficiencies and personal difficulties.
  • Conduct searches of inmates and their property, as well as random drug testing.
  • Manage financial obligations for assigned inmates in coordination with bookkeeping staff.
  • Document and report rules violations, generating incident reports and notification letters to judges.
  • Appear in court as required to provide documentation and testimony regarding inmate cases.
