About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides practical nursing care for patients under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or other licensed medical provider. Assesses, plans, directs and evaluates nursing care for assigned patients, as determined by the patient's physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs in accordance with standards and scope established standards by the Iowa Board of Nursing and PHC policies and procedures. Performs work with special consideration for patient safety and infection control policies and procedures. Works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to welcome patients to a safe and inclusive environment and to engage patients in holistic care. Follows assigned workflows efficiently to ensure PHC mission and financial success. Demonstrates iCare values in all interactions. This position typically works at PHC in Marshalltown 4 days per week and in Ames 1 day per week. This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, specific schedule is to be determined and may include some evening hours until 8 PM. Weekend hours will not be required. Our Medical Assistants are occasionally needed to cover other shifts or to work at other PHC clinics in Ames, Des Moines, and Marshalltown. Mileage reimbursement and/or an out of town travel bonus may apply.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited nursing program accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing for licensure.
  • Working knowledge of nursing care regulations and practices established by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
  • Nursing skills including the application of universal patient care precautions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prioritization skills with ability for detail orientation.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills with ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group.
  • Professionalism with ability to maintain composure in all situations and interact empathetically.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft office applications and electronic health record system.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Current LPN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing, Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers; Current Mandatory Reporter Training: Child Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse recognized by the State of Iowa
  • Must be obtained with Introductory Period if not current.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a community health center or medical clinic.
  • Effective verbal and written bilingual skills in English and Spanish.
  • Phlebotomy skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with assigned Patient Care Team and others to provide needed healthcare to patients in a clinic setting. Performs assigned workflows efficiently and effectively.
  • Prepares for exam/procedure and assists provider as requested. Facilitates the patient rooming and intake process and obtains accurate patient vital signs per established workflow.
  • Documents patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record. Completes timely prior authorizations and referrals per established guidelines.
  • Performs point-of-care testing per CLIA guidelines and other established workflows. Ensures service orders are completed timely. Administers medications, immunizations, and treatments per written or standing orders.
  • Provides patient education appropriate to the patient's age and identified learning needs.
  • Completes and accurately documents quality controls per established process. Performs pre-cleaning and transport of contaminated instruments per infection control policies and procedures. Routinely evaluates supply levels in exam rooms, removing expired supplies and restocking as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
