About The Position

The Field Museum is offering a Women In Science Undergraduate Internship focused on exploring beetle diversity, specifically studying the evolutionary history of snout beetles, also known as weevils. This group of beetles is incredibly diverse, comprising more species than all vertebrates combined, and they interact with plants in various roles, including as pollinators and pests. The internship will focus on a subgroup known as Cossoninae, which inhabit wood and exhibit unique behaviors such as caring for their larvae. The project aims to fill a significant knowledge gap by preparing specimens for DNA sequencing using advanced genomic methods. Interns will learn to identify, organize, and database beetle specimens, extract DNA, prepare samples for sequencing, and assist in analyzing genomic data. Key evolutionary questions will be explored, such as how host plant choices influence beetle diversity and the origins of unique behaviors like parental care and complex mating systems.
