About The Position

The High School Biology Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and rigorous instruction in various biological concepts to high school students. This role involves developing and implementing a comprehensive biology curriculum, fostering scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the living world. The teacher will prepare students for college-level science courses, standardized tests, and careers in STEM fields.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Science Education, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
• Valid state teaching certification/licensure in Biology or General Science (with a strong Biology specialization) for high school grades.
• Experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments.
• Extensive knowledge of biological principles, theories, and methodologies.
• Proficiency in designing, conducting, and analyzing scientific experiments.
• Strong understanding of scientific inquiry and the scientific method.
• Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive and productive learning environment.
• Exceptional communication (oral and written), presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to inspire and motivate high school students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
• Familiarity with educational technology, laboratory equipment, and safety protocols.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Commitment to fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students.

Nice To Haves

• Prior teaching experience at the high school level is preferred. Student teaching or internship experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver lesson plans that adhere to state and national science standards, district curriculum guidelines, and the diverse learning needs of high school students.
• Teach a range of biology topics, which may include: Cell Biology Genetics and Heredity Evolution and Natural Selection Ecology and Environmental Science Human Anatomy and Physiology Microbiology Biochemistry
• Design and facilitate hands-on laboratory experiments, dissections, and field investigations to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop practical scientific skills.
• Integrate technology, simulations, and real-world applications into instruction to enhance student engagement and understanding.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including gifted students, students with learning disabilities, and English language learners.
• Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including formative and summative assessments, quizzes, tests, lab reports, projects, and presentations.
• Provide timely and constructive feedback to students on their progress and performance.
• Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment conducive to scientific exploration and discovery.
• Implement effective classroom management strategies to promote student engagement, respect, and responsibility.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, safety procedures, and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with school, district, and state guidelines.
• Supervise students during lab activities, field trips, and other learning experiences.
• Monitor student progress and identify students who may need additional support or enrichment.
• Provide individualized or small group tutoring and assistance as needed.
• Counsel students regarding academic performance, course selection, and career pathways in science.
• Foster students' curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a lifelong love of science.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and administration regarding student performance, behavior, and academic needs.
• Collaborate with other science department members to develop curriculum, share resources, and ensure consistency in instructional practices.
• Participate in departmental meetings, professional learning communities, and school-wide initiatives.
• Engage with the wider scientific community through professional organizations, workshops, and conferences.
• Stay current with advancements in biological science and best practices in science education.
• Participate in ongoing professional development activities to enhance teaching skills and content knowledge.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of the school's science curriculum and programs.
• May supervise extracurricular science clubs, competitions, or research projects.
