About the position

The Special Education Teacher for the Comprehensive Life Skills Classroom is responsible for providing quality education to students with diverse needs. This role requires a commitment to life-long learning and active participation in professional development. The teacher must be solution-focused, work effectively with colleagues, and have the aptitude for gathering and analyzing data to improve teaching effectiveness. A strong commitment to the success of all students, including special education, English Language Learners, and gifted students, is essential. The teacher will implement the District's educational philosophy and instructional goals, establish clear objectives for lessons, and communicate these objectives to students.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs and abilities of students.
  • Prepare for classes and show written evidence of preparation.
  • Identify students with learning problems and seek assistance from District specialists.
  • Uphold and enforce school rules and develop reasonable classroom behavior rules.
  • Maintain accurate records and inventories as required by law and District policy.
  • Protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with students and parents.
  • Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside instructional hours.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Cooperate with staff in planning instructional goals and methods.
  • Assist in the selection of instructional materials.
  • Establish cooperative relations with others.
  • Accept responsibility for co-curricular activities if requested.
  • Pursue professional growth through reading, workshops, and advanced coursework.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the principal.

Requirements

  • Must hold the proper certification and endorsements as required by the State Board of Education.
  • Qualifying License: Special K-12.
  • Qualifying Endorsement: Generalist.
  • Experience teaching a self-contained special education classroom.
  • Ability to manage paraprofessional support.
  • Capacity to lift at least 75 pounds.
  • Willingness to assist with toileting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience developing support systems using assistive technology.
  • Experience in coordinating related services and accessing community supports.
  • Training in CPI or similar de-escalation techniques.
  • Experience in the development of behavioral plans.
  • Experience administering Nevada Alternative Assessment.
