Literary Arts is a nonprofit arts organization located in Portland, Oregon with a 40-year history of serving the state's readers and writers. Our programs include Portland Arts & Lectures, one of the country's largest lecture series; Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships, which celebrates Oregon's writers and independent publishers; and Youth Programs, including WITS, which brings professional writers into high school classrooms to teach creative writing intensives. For more information about Literary Arts, visit www.literary-arts.org. Our suite of Youth Programs reaches more than 4,000 students annually in Multnomah County and beyond. The core of our initiatives is Writers in the Schools (WITS). Since 1996, WITS has reached tens of thousands of high school students, offering writing instruction, creative community, and performance and publication opportunities. The Literary Arts Student Anthology is where the published work of WITS students lives on year after year. The WITS Apprenticeship for Writers of Color is designed to act as a pathway for writers who would like to gain the experience necessary to be hired as a teaching artist in Literary Arts' WITS program. Participants will learn alongside peers through workshops focusing on curriculum, instruction, and building trust and connection in the classroom. Following the workshop series, apprentices will gain hands-on experience while shadowing and supporting a WITS residency from start to finish. We are committed to building a roster of teaching artists that reflects the diversity of the schools we serve. This is a compensated learning opportunity with the goal of helping to bolster the BIPOC teaching artist community of Literary Arts and Portland at large. The WITS Apprenticeship for Writers of Color offers: • A $1,400 stipend • 4 workshops with your cohort • Learning alongside a WITS writer during a residency in a co-teaching experience • Additional paid professional development meetings offered by Literary Arts • Tickets to Literary Arts events (subject to availability)
