Job Highlights Youth Apprentices in the Medical Assistant pathway, work closely with a nursing care team to provide direct patient care and complete office tasks in one of SSM’s outpatient clinics. Availability to work days during a standard work week is crucial to fulfilling the 450 hour requirement. A licensed or certified professional will serve as your mentor and will help guide your training while providing ongoing support in the role. Job Summary: Assists with administrative and clinical duties of a physician’s office from general office procedures to the technical phases of examining room assisting and elementary medical laboratory techniques.

Requirements

  • High school junior or senior
  • 16 years of age
  • Must be authorized and approved by the Wisconsin Youth Apprentice Program in accordance with your local school criteria
  • Ability to work 10-15 hours per week at a clinic site M-F during the day
  • Reliable transportation to get to and from work
  • Satisfactory progress towards graduation
  • Commit to completing 450 hours at the jobsite
  • Demonstrated maturity and responsibility
  • Skill with attending to details, excellent attendance and a strong work ethic
  • Foster a culture of caring through interpersonal relationships and communication
  • Must be at least 16 years of age prior to start date and current high school student
  • Acceptance into Youth Apprenticeship program through local high school
  • No experience required
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Frequent use of hearing to distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving patients.
  • Occasional use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Occasional driving.

  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

  • Effectively work as part of a team, communicate effectively with close attention to details
  • Maintain academic and attendance requirements for participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Program
  • Participate in progress reviews scheduled with mentors, school staff, parent(s) or guardian(s), and employer
  • Assist with treatment order from provider with direct supervision from a licensed professional
  • Interview patients and record information as instructed
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations
  • Perform office tasks such as answering phones, maintaining records, and filing
  • Assist with the ordering and stocking of supplies and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Responds to patient inquiries both in person and via telephone.
  • Schedules patient appointments.
  • Maintains patient records and perform administrative tasks.
  • Sets up area for exams/procedures and room patients.
  • Instructs patients in the collection of specimens.
  • Assists in performing testing under the supervision of staff.
  • Assists physician with patient care for routine examinations.
  • Cleans and prepares supplies and instruments.
  • Maintains inventory.
  • Obtains vital signs.
  • Respects patient confidentiality and maintains Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
