Wireless Software Engineer, WiFi

HP IQSan Francisco, CA
33d$120,000 - $165,000

About The Position

HP IQ’s Wireless Engineering team is seeking a Software Engineer with deep expertise in Wi-Fi standards and wireless software stack development. The ideal candidate will bring strong knowledge of lower-layer protocols and hands-on experience developing, integrating, and optimizing wireless software to deliver industry-leading connectivity performance and user experiences. You will work at the intersection of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and emerging device-to-device transport technologies, tackling complex challenges in performance, reliability, and low-latency communication. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge innovations that are redefining how people and devices seamlessly connect across the modern enterprise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in Wi-Fi software development, including protocol behavior, performance tuning, and debugging.
  • 1+ years of experience developing software SDKs/frameworks on Android, Linux, or similar OS platforms.
  • Strong programming skills in Java, C, C++, or Objective-C, with solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals (OO design, debugging, system-level architecture).
  • Familiarity with radio standards such as 802.11 and Bluetooth, and an understanding of related protocol stacks.
  • Experience collaborating across hardware, OS, QA, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to work independently, drive technical tasks to closure, and clearly communicate root-cause findings to senior leadership and partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of 802.11 standards, WLAN MAC/PHY operation, RF concepts, and enterprise Wi-Fi architectures (controller-based or cloud-managed).
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and embedded systems programming for performance-critical wireless features.
  • Experience working directly with wireless chipset vendors to optimize connectivity performance and resolve interoperability issues.
  • Comfort working across diverse platforms including Linux, Windows, embedded systems, cloud-managed networks, and mobile OS stacks.
  • Expertise in Wi-Fi performance analysis using tools such as Wireshark, spectrum/RF analyzers, logging frameworks, and low-level tracing.
  • Strong understanding of peer-to-peer technologies (Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Aware), including device discovery, group formation, and data transport mechanisms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate wireless software features across Android, Windows, and embedded platforms, including SDKs, frameworks, and system services.
  • Implement, optimize, and tune wireless networking protocols with a focus on enterprise-scale architectures and deployments.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot peer-to-peer technologies - such as Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Aware to deliver secure, reliable, and low-latency connectivity across diverse networking scenarios.
  • Collaborate closely with wireless chipset vendors, industry partners, and internal engineering teams to align designs, debug system-level issues, and optimize end-to-end wireless performance.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex wireless behavior including performance degradation, QoS bottlenecks, interoperability issues, and security constraints in large-scale networks.
