About the position

The Chainsaw Crew Member position is a full-time, seasonal role within the Appalachian Conservation Corps, based out of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This entry-level position focuses on environmental conservation and restoration projects, where crew members will be trained to safely use chainsaws and other tools. The role emphasizes teamwork, skill development, and community building among crew members while providing opportunities for personal and professional growth in environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities

  • Safely use chainsaws, crosscut saws, and other trail tools for conservation projects.
  • Assist with trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and tree planting.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions performing heavy manual labor.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and stretch circles before work begins.
  • Collaborate with crew members and leaders to plan meals and complete chores while in the field.

Requirements

  • Must have first aid and CPR certification or be willing to earn it before the start date.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30 (exceptions for veterans up to age 35).
  • Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Pass background checks including the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federal/State criminal background check.
  • Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.

Nice-to-haves

  • General comfort and previous knowledge of working/living in an outdoor setting.
