About The Position

The Sterile Processing Coordinator meets all requirements of Sterile Processing Technician Levels I, II, and III and demonstrates expert-level knowledge of sterile processing practices and the application of AAMI standards. This role provides daily operational leadership within the Sterile Processing Department, serving as a mentor, educator, and charge resource for staff. The Coordinator plays a key role in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives at both the departmental and hospital level. This position proactively identifies opportunities for improvement, implements process enhancements, and ensures compliance with Baystate Health System goals, policies, and regulatory requirements. The Coordinator maintains comprehensive knowledge of applicable standards and regulations, including OSHA, Department of Public Health (DPH), Joint Commission (JC), AAMI, and AORN as they relate to sterile processing operations.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in a Sterile Processing Department
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operating room workflows and surgical instrumentation
  • Proven leadership, mentoring, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications and medical terminology
  • Understanding of anatomy and physiology
  • Expert-level proficiency in: Sterilization techniques, Decontamination and high-level disinfection, Instrument tray assembly, Case cart preparation
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • GED or HiSET
  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician - OtherOther

  • Experience as a Surgical Technologist and/or equivalent sterile processing leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and application of sterilization standards and best practices
  • Assume charge responsibilities and on-call coverage as needed
  • Maintain accountability for 100% competency in required skills for assigned services
  • Precept, mentor, and support Sterile Processing Technicians at Levels I, II, and III
  • Monitor and enforce departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance
  • Plan and deliver educational in-services through independent research and ongoing professional development
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of surgical specialties, instrumentation, and emerging technologies
  • Establish work priorities and coordinate daily workflow to meet customer and operational demands
  • Organize, assign, and adjust staff activities to maximize efficiency and productivity
  • Maintain, collect, and audit daily records related to decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and equipment maintenance
  • Identify equipment malfunctions (sterilizers, ultrasonics, washer-decontaminators) and ensure timely follow-up and resolution
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and initiate education, correction, and manager notification as appropriate
  • Collaborate with Operating Room service leads regarding equipment purchases, par level adjustments, and utilization needs
  • Demonstrate and model commitment to Organizational Service Standards and Operating Principles: Trust, Respect, Integrity, Communication, and Collaboration
  • Apply sound judgment and critical thinking skills to problem-solving and escalation of critical issues
  • Communicate and collaborate with the department manager to ensure operational and procedural updates are effectively shared with staff through verbal communication, shift reports, bulletin boards, communication logs, and email
