About The Position

Join our team in supporting the critical research and development mission of the Department of the Air Force's Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. We are seeking a skilled Systems Administrator to manage and maintain a dynamic, mission-critical IT environment. As a key member of our team, you will ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that directly support our nation's scientists and researchers. Key Responsibilities : Server & Workstation Administration : Perform comprehensive administration, performance tuning, and security hardening for both Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems. Active Directory Management : Administer Active Directory services, including Group Policy (GPO) management and troubleshooting, DNS, and user/group administration within a multi-level DoD forest. Storage Management : Administer and maintain local storage solutions, including NetApp and EMC Isilon, as well as S3-compatible object storage platforms like Cloudian. Infrastructure & Application Support : Manage and maintain key infrastructure applications, including Commvault for backups, SolarWinds for monitoring, and ServiceNow for incident management. Provide support for web applications running on ColdFusion. Database Support : Provide administrative support for Microsoft SQL Server environments, assisting with maintenance, monitoring, and ensuring operational readiness. Security & Compliance : Implement and maintain DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), perform regular system patching and vulnerability remediation, and support security audits. Scripting & Automation : Develop and maintain scripts, primarily using PowerShell, to automate routine administrative tasks, improve efficiency, and ensure system consistency. Research Software Support : Support the deployment and maintenance of commercial scientific applications such as Matlab, Comsol, and Pymol on both Windows and Linux platforms. Virtualization : Manage virtual machines and resources within a VMware vSphere environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-6 years of professional experience in systems administration.
  • Active Secret security clearance (or higher).
  • Active DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CySA+).
  • Demonstrated experience in Windows Server administration and advanced Active Directory management.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a complex, enterprise-level environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems.
  • Proficiency in scripting with PowerShell for IT automation.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise storage (NetApp, EMC Isilon) and S3-compatible object storage (Cloudian).
  • Experience providing administrative support for Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: Commvault, SolarWinds, ServiceNow, or VMware vSphere.
  • Familiarity with DoD security requirements, STIGs, and the Risk Management Framework (RMF).
  • Experience supporting scientific or engineering software applications.
