About The Position

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. We are hiring for one full-time, permanent position located at the Willamette Hatchery in Oakridge, Oregon. The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply as the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level (Monthly Salary of $3,515 -$4,312), as the department may consider under-filling the position. What you will do: In this role, you will provide support for the hatchery by caring for the Spring Chinook and Rainbow Trout being raised. You will also perform maintenance on the grounds, equipment, and other duties. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. Requirements

  • Fish & Wildlife Technician Option:
  • Option 1: Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
  • Option 2: An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science. A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.
  • Note: You do not need to meet the Fish & Wildlife Technician minimum qualifications to be considered: the department may consider underfilling at the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level.
  • Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry Option - Underfill: Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications. Previous related experience is desirable).
  • NOTE: this position requires the successful candidate to live onsite, as well as requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and clean rearing containers to receive fry or fish
  • Feed, monitor, treat, and transport fish
  • Set and monitor water flows
  • Use hand and power tools to power wash, paint, and repair hatchery buildings and fish ponds
  • Conduct hatchery tours and answer questions from the public (visitors)
  • Grounds, building and equipment maintenance
