About The Position

Under general supervision, this position supports the Wildlife Program within OSMP’s Resource Stewardship Division. This is accomplished through the implementation of existing natural resource inventory and monitoring projects guided by departmental management plans. This position will support all chartered land uses and open space purposes. The role is primarily field based (70-90%), conducting specialized wildlife surveys, assisting with ongoing biological research, supporting volunteers in collecting wildlife-related data, reporting findings to senior ecologists for analysis and integration into management decisions, and the execution of projects that enhance natural habitats and wildlife populations on OSMP properties.

Requirements

Ability to effectively use and maintain equipment used in wildlife monitoring.
Ability to demonstrate careful attention to detail including accurate data collection skills.
Ability to follow established collection protocols. keeping data organized through the entire collection process, from field planning, to collection, and through data entry so the information can be used to inform and drive management decisions.
Ability to work and communicate effectively and work with diverse groups of people both in the office and as a public-facing staff member representing OSMP on the trail system.
Ability to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication demonstrating exemplary customer service.
Ability and willingness to work on a wide array of wildlife monitoring projects .
Ability to be self-motivated to work individually, yet able to work closely in pairs or as part of a team.
Ability to demonstrate flexibility and be available to work early morning and evening hours.
Knowledge and familiarity with field equipment including binoculars, spotting scopes, GPS units, remote cameras, water quality measuring equipment, bat detectors, radio telemetry equipment, and rangefinders.
Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.
Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Specialized coursework, training or experience in wildlife ecology, wildlife management or similar field.
Two (2) years of experience and a semi-advanced understanding of ecological principles and data collection frameworks.
Ability and willingness to hike long distances alone on steep, uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions.
Physical ability to lift and carry equipment and to stand, walk, and kneel while performing tasks on rough terrain.
Able to lift 30 pounds daily.
Safely hiking long distances off-trail.
Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make judgments related to safety.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree or upper division college coursework in Ecology, Biology or Natural Resources related field.
Greater than 2 years experience with wildlife field monitoring methods.
Knowledge, experience and familiarity with various wildlife monitoring methods such as distance sampling for songbirds, small mammal trapping, amphibian visual encounter surveys, and bat surveys.
Knowledge at an extensive level of Colorado birds by sight and sound, identification of Colorado amphibians and small mammals.
Knowledge of extensive familiarity with OSMP properties, trails, and access points.

Responsibilities

Engages in approximately 80% field work and 20% office work.
Performs wildlife inventory and monitoring of songbirds (forest and grassland), raptors, mammals, and amphibians following specific study plans and established protocols.
Collects, enters and organizes wildlife data using Survey 123, Access, Excel and GIS.
Performs GPS field mapping and data entry.
Assists with support of volunteers in scheduling monitoring visits, training in wildlife monitoring methodology, and answering technical questions.
Uses GIS software to display spatial information and produce maps.
Operates four-wheel drive vehicles on rough terrain.
Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.
Uses all proper safety equipment.
Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
Knows and complies with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.
