About The Position

The Wildlife Biologist position within the Department of Agriculture is responsible for providing professional wildlife expertise in the protection, management, and improvement of wildlife habitats in the Southwestern Region. The role involves coordinating wildlife management with other resource uses and implementing management programs to enhance biodiversity. The position requires participation in interdisciplinary teams and includes supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Basic Requirement: Degree in biological science with specific coursework in wildlife subjects, zoology, and botany.
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in analyzing data to determine environmental conditions and characteristics.
  • Experience in preparing input for wildlife plans based on field surveys.
  • Experience in providing input in wildlife management programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional wildlife expertise in the protection, management, and improvement of wildlife habitats.
  • Coordinate wildlife management with other resource uses such as timber, recreation, and minerals management.
  • Implement wildlife habitat management programs with an emphasis on maintaining and enhancing biodiversity.
  • Prepare or review biological evaluations for threatened, endangered, or sensitive species.
  • Recognize wildlife management activity problems or concerns and recommend preventive or mitigation actions.
  • Develop or provide input into the annual program of work, including determining budgeting and staffing needs.
  • Prepare or review environmental assessments and environmental impact statements affecting wildlife resources.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of alternatives and development of final recommendations for environmental impact to wildlife resources.
  • Participate on interdisciplinary teams to evaluate the impact of Service or non-Service activities on National Forest lands.
  • Perform supervisory responsibilities 20% of the time.
