About the position

The Wildlife Biologist position at the USDA, APHIS, WS focuses on wildlife damage management operations, addressing issues related to wild and feral animal species in various environments. The role involves project and program delivery, management, and administration with minimal supervision, ensuring compliance with wildlife-related laws and effective communication of damage management techniques to the public.

Responsibilities

  • Assist cooperators in understanding and complying with wildlife-related laws such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Endangered Species Act.
  • Take extensive training on wildlife damage or disease recognition and control methods.
  • Communicate safe and effective damage management techniques to the public.
  • Assist other WS employees and train new personnel as needed.
  • Modify established control techniques to meet local conditions and address specific considerations.
  • Recommend areas for potential research to reduce risks of damage or disease transmission.
  • Develop and deliver training for cooperators and stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with various government agencies and organizations.
  • Gather, compile, evaluate, and present data on wildlife damage to stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Degree in Biological Science with specific coursework in wildlife subjects, zoology, and botany.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level, or two years of progressively higher-level graduate education in Wildlife Biology or related fields.
  • Experience designing wildlife survey programs and coordinating wildlife damage management projects.
  • Experience interpreting and applying wildlife management policies and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with outreach and public communication regarding wildlife management.
  • Familiarity with federal and state wildlife management laws and regulations.
