About The Position

The Wildlife Mitigation Program (WMP) of the Spokane Tribe manages 8,407 acres of mitigation lands secured for the Tribe by Bonneville Power Administration to mitigate the impacts of Grand Coulee Dam. The Wildlife Biologist (Weeds) position is a full-time, permanent position located in Wellpinit, Washington and is responsible for invasive weed management activities on Wildlife Mitigation Areas (WMA) with the goal of ensuring sustainable wildlife and fish populations and their supporting habitats. Specific objectives are listed below.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Management/Ecology, Natural Resource Science, Environmental Science, or closely related field.
  • 12 months of professional experience related to wildlife population or habitat management, invasive species control, or closely related field.
  • Must be able to operate GPS and mapping tools; ArcMap or ArcPro.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License, reliable transportation, and be tribally insurable.
  • Must be able to obtain Pesticide Applicators License from Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the weed control operations of the WMP on 11,000 acres of Mitigation properties.
  • Conduct wildlife operations & maintenance activities on wildlife mitigation lands such as noxious weed control, forest thinning, cover crop seeding, tree and shrub planting, native grass seeding, prescribed burning, access road maintenance, and maintenance of equipment and Tribal facilities.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Integrated Weed Management Plan (IWMP) on mitigation lands.
  • Maintain records of chemical, biological, and mechanical control applications.
  • Collect and input field data and spatial data into GIS software and conduct relevant analyses to inform project decisions.
  • Maintain databases with records of spray activities, monitoring studies, and equipment maintenance and inventory.
  • Assist with equipment maintenance: tractors, chainsaws, ATV, side by side, tractor implements, vehicles & etc.
  • Train technical staff on chemical weed control and related worker protection standards.
  • Communicate project progress and needs to supervisors.
  • Provide habitat management recommendations to the WMP Manager.
  • Participate with the Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP) Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to review project proposals on the reservation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
