About The Position

The National Park Service is looking to fill positions in various locations including Yosemite National Park, Redwood National and State Parks, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This position is for a wildland firefighter who will serve on a wildland engine, hotshot/hand crew, or prescribed fire crew. The role involves fire line construction, backfiring, burnout operations, and engine operations, among other responsibilities. The job is permanent and full-time, with a salary range of $40,332 to $52,426 per year, classified under GS 5 pay scale.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Must submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician.
  • Must pass a medical examination and periodic medical examinations throughout employment.
  • Must complete the Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in wildland fire control, prevention, or suppression.
  • Completion of relevant coursework in forestry, fire science, or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as wildland firefighter on a wildland engine, hotshot/hand crew, or prescribed fire crew.
  • Locates fireline, directs and participates in fire line construction, backfiring, and burnout operations.
  • Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.
  • Recommends best approaches and practices to protect values at risk.
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used in wildland and prescribed fire situations.
  • Performs or instructs others in preventative maintenance inspections and basic repairs of vehicles and equipment.
  • Accomplishes emergency repairs as necessary to permit continued use of equipment.
