About The Position

This position provides expert analysis and guidance on wildfire potential, behavior and impacts across Oncor’s territory. This role supports operational decision-making, wildfire mitigation strategies, and emergency response by assessing fuels, topography and weather interactions. This position will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Oncor’s wildfire behavior analysis and wildfire mitigation program. This role will be responsible for building and managing the systems, tools, and strategies that forecast wildfire behavior, support wildfire mitigation planning, and strengthen Oncor’s operational readiness. The incumbent will work across departments and with external partners to ensure that fire behavior modeling and fire planning are effectively integrated into Oncor’s broader wildfire mitigation, emergency response, and asset protection efforts.

Requirements

Familiarity with current industry used operational fire behavior modeling (e.g., Rothermel's surface fire spread model with standard or custom fuel models, with canopy fuel characteristics in forest settings).
Knowledge of wildfire behavior prediction, fuels management, wildland fire planning principles, and wildfire modeling tools (e.g., Technosylva).
Regional understanding of vegetation/fuel types and their interaction to the fire environment.
Knowledge of regional fire weather patterns such as the Southern Great Plains Wildfire Outbreak pattern.
Experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, scenario planning, and risk analysis related to wildfire events.
Knowledge of the Scott & Burgan’s fire behavior fuel models.
Proven track record of working collaboratively across departments.
Excellent communication and team-building skills for effective relationships with internal and external customers.
Ability to work under pressure during high-impact weather and wildfire events.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
Wildfire Behavior Specialist I: Applicants with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in wildfire behavior prediction, fire management, or related applied science, are encouraged to apply.
Wildfire Behavior Specialist II: Applicants with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience preferred in wildfire behavior prediction, fire management, or related applied science, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Perform and oversee wildfire behavior analysis using fuels, topography, and weather data to inform long-term, near-term and real-time wildfire mitigation strategies.
Performs analysis of wildfire hazard and risk as a function of fuel, weather, topography, and susceptibility of valued resources and assets.
Characterize fuels (fuel types, loadings, moistures) across the Oncor territory.
Observe the fire environment and the resulting fire behavior to understand critical factors and validate assumptions, inputs, and conclusions from analyzes and forecasts.
Contribute to the Company’s wildfire seasonal outlook meetings and long-term planning.
Utilize and manage wildfire modeling tools (e.g., Technosylva) to produce wildfire spread predictions and scenario analyses.
Support Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) decision-making with wildfire behavior analysis, consequences, and real-time fire environment analysis.
Translate wildfire behavior forecasts into actionable planning products to inform mitigation projects, emergency response strategies, and infrastructure protection plans.
Research and help develop refined wildfire behavior decision support tools, methodologies and visualization platforms to enhance situational awareness.
Support Oncor’s incident management team during wildfire events by providing fire behavior projections and risk assessments.
Assist in delivering daily and event-driven fire weather briefings to internal stakeholders, including fire behavior assessments, and meteorological summaries.
Develop program strategies that align fire behavior analysis with wildfire mitigation priorities, operational needs, and regulatory requirements.
Assist in providing technical support to internal stakeholders on interpreting wildfire modeling outputs and applying planning strategies.
Participate in operational briefings, and other meetings as directed.
Tracks results and measurements upon completion of projects and initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned.
