About The Position

The Wilderness Ranger is a dynamic position serving the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The majority of the work scope is spent working outdoors in both front and backcountry recreation areas, at popular trailheads and visitor hotspots. The Wilderness Ranger chiefly patrols Desolation Wilderness, working collaboratively with rangers from the Eldorado National Forest, as well as LTBMU recreation staff and managers. The position requires strong physical stamina, with the ability to hike long distances independently in a variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, excessive heat, etc.). Duties include trail repair and maintenance, wilderness permit inspections, visitor management, wildlife-visitor management, site naturalization and response to emergency situations. During acceptable summer and fall months, the Wilderness Ranger typically spends up to three nights per week camping in the backcountry. This is a full-time position with uniform and gear stipend provided.

Requirements

  • Trail maintenance knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of backcountry wilderness ethics and regulations
  • Ability to communicate fluidly with members of the public from varying backgrounds
  • Ability to hike long distances in wilderness
  • Ability to independently perform job duties
  • Knowledge of Desolation Wilderness flora, fauna and trail network
  • Valid Driver’s License for duration of the position
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Wilderness First Aid certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, biology, ecology, or other natural sciences field preferred.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification desired.
  • 0-2 years of experience in wilderness or personal outdoor recreation experiences in wilderness preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols back country recreation wilderness areas and front country trailheads, parking lots, restroom facilities, serving as primary Forest Service presence.
  • Provides general information and public interaction daily to forest.
  • Patrols wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan.
  • Cleans both roadside and/or backcountry wilderness sites. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage.
  • Inspects recreation wilderness areas, areas of concentrated public use, and ensures public health and safety for the general public.
