About The Position

The WIC Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty, conducts and documents nutrition assessments. Nutrition education and counseling for health and breastfeeding services/promotion. Essential duties are inclusive of medical nutrition therapy and other duties for the operation of the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The WIC Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is accountable to the following El Rio Health WIC Program specific goals: Every participant is provided services utilizing the participant centered services delivery model. Supports and promotes every mother's goal for breastfeeding. Encourages and empowers families to incorporate healthy lifestyle choices supporting healthy growth and weight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition or related field from an accredited college or university and course work accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Completed an ACEND accredited supervised practicum at a health care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation.
  • One (1) years' experience in nutrition education counseling in a maternal/child or clinical setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years' experience in community, public health, clinical, pediatric nutrition, women's health nutrition or outpatient Medical Nutrition therapy.
  • Three (3) years' experience in nutrition education counseling in a maternal/child or clinical setting, experience with the Women's, Infants, and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition program desirable.
  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) desired.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) with the ability to speak, read and write in both languages.

Responsibilities

  • Provides services to WIC clients, High Risk Medical Nutrition Therapy (Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention/Counseling and Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation) and provides oversight of Med Risk Nutritionist formula authorization and approval of specialized formulas.
  • Provides as needed nutrition care for low and medium risk participants at (re)certification and follow-up, including all aspects of anthropometric and hematological data collection, dietary and nutritional risk assessment, food package assignment, nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education, documentation and nutrition data entry, health and social service referrals and follow-up nutrition education.
  • Utilizes same day ADIME professional documentation format for all High Risk and Medium Risk participants and for Certifications or Mid-Certifications completed on the same day as the High-Risk Consult and all documentation is competed on same day as RDN consult/service.
  • Maintains working knowledge of and ability to use universal health precautions to avoid infection, and ability to properly operate various medical equipment, such as hemocue machine, scales, measuring devices, and media equipment.
  • Consults with client's health care providers as indicated on dietary habits, needs, and dietary prescriptions, reviewing client's nutrition education.
  • Provides counseling in a participant-centered manner through motivational interviewing and emotion-based counseling with the goal of eliciting behavior change.
  • Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary WIC team in clinic scheduling, caseload monitoring, and outreach; works with other program staff and disciplines to enhance integration and quality of service.
  • Assists WIC Nutrition Services Manager in staff training/development activities for WIC Medium Risk Nutritionist and in training paraprofessional WIC staff (Nutrition Education Specialists).
  • Functions in a lead capacity in the absence of the Nutrition Services Manager.
  • Serves as or assists El Rio WIC Agency Breastfeeding Coordinator under the supervision of the Nutrition Services Manager.
  • Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Assists WIC Nutrition Services Manager in Local Agency Self Assessments (LASA's) and implementation of resulting action plans.
  • Performs program support duties including, preparing reports and documents, assisting in updating local agency policy and procedure manuals and resolving WIC specific computer/software related problems.
  • Solves or assists in solving problems arising from the implementation of the WIC rules and regulations.
  • Complies with all facility policies and procedures including, but not limited to, those addressing HIPAA and Compliance.
  • Receives training and attends appropriate in-services to enhance competency.
  • Participates in general WIC clinic office duties.
