About The Position

We have an opportunity for a Wetland / Terrestrial Ecologist to join our team and to make a meaningful contribution to the day-to-day lives of many people in the Taranaki region. This role will be responsible for providing the Council with technical input, from a wetland ecology perspective, into biodiversity and resource management functions. Please note, this is a fixed term parental leave cover position. You will need to be available from mid-July 2026 through to August 2027. Requirements

Skilled at a range of field techniques in ecological monitoring and management, preferably wetlands.
An understanding of the Resource Management Act 1991 and national policy relating to wetlands will be required.
Project management experience and excellent organisational skills.
Field skills, preferably related to wetland ecosystems, experience with GIS and mapping, data analysis and technical reporting will enable you to deliver on the requirements of the role.
Versatile, resilient, curious and have well developed interpersonal skills.
Sound verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Nice To Haves

A tertiary qualification with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an ecological field, with wetlands an advantage
Ability to identify a wide range of New Zealand flora, both indigenous and exotic
Physically fit and comfortable working in the outdoors
Meticulous attention to detail
A pragmatic approach to problem solving
Ability to manage multiple tasks

Responsibilities

Implementing Council’s wetland monitoring and mapping programmes
Providing technical input into compliance investigations, resource consent applications and policy and plan development
