About The Position

This is an open competitive advertisement for a Career Service position as a Wellness Education Specialist located at Mayo Correctional Institution in the Education Department. The mission of the Education Department is to provide comprehensive educational programs and services to inmates, aiming to enhance their academic, vocational, and life skills, promote personal development, and facilitate successful reintegration into society, thereby reducing recidivism. This role is not a telework position and requires reporting to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • One year of professional experience in conducting recreational activities or health/wellness.
  • Correctional experience can substitute for one year of the required work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, and teaches wellness education programs for inmates, including classroom activities and tobacco cessation programs, while promoting social recovery.
  • Supervises inmates during recreational and wellness activities, ensuring proper security and discipline, and writes reports when necessary.
  • Monitors inmate participation in wellness and recreation programs, sets goals, and aligns activities with institutional priorities and resources.
  • Manages and tracks wellness equipment and supplies, conducting regular inventories to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Organizes special events, recreational activities, and cultural programs, including coordinating with outside groups and facility staff.
