About The Position

Lead Wellness with Purpose. Build Health for All. At the Y, wellness is about strengthening community through innovative health programming for all. As the Wellness Director at the Alexandria Y, you’ll lead the daily operations of our health and wellness center while ensuring that every person who walks through our doors experiences the Y’s commitment to equity, belonging, and whole-person health. About the Role You will oversee the wellness center’s programs, staff, and member experience with a focus on how these services support the Y’s larger mission: helping people of all backgrounds and abilities live healthier, more connected lives.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree (or advanced degree) in exercise science, kinesiology, nutrition or physical education is required.
  • Must possess a current nationally recognized fitness certifications (i.e. ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA, NSPA).
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience working within a Wellness/Fitness department.
  • Supervisory experience, a record of delivering excellent personal training management and instruction.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and administrative skills including staff supervision and development.
  • Flexible work schedule with the availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with staff and members while committed to working with diverse population.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership: Manage wellness center operations, including wellness staff, group exercise programs, personal training, equipment, and schedules.
  • Mission-Aligned Programming: Ensure programs reflect YMCA values and serve a wide range of community members — from teens to older adults, from seasoned athletes to those just beginning their wellness journey.
  • For All: Foster a welcoming environment where every member feels seen, supported, and encouraged — especially those who may face barriers to participation.
  • Staff Development: Recruit, train, and support a diverse team of wellness staff who lead with empathy, expertise, and a commitment to safety and service.
  • Community Engagement: Partner with other departments and community organizations to support wellness outreach, chronic disease prevention, and youth fitness programs that go beyond our walls.
  • Measurement & Impact: Use member feedback, program participation, and community health data to improve services and expand impact.
