About The Position

The Wellness Director leads center wellness staff members in all member connection and retention initiatives related to the wellness center and wellness programming. The Director will manage the day-to-day operations of health and wellness programs and wellness floor operations. This position provides direct leadership for personal training, group training, group exercise, healthy living programs, youth conditioning programs, and wellness floor staff; directly supervising and developing these staff teams to provide the highest quality service and exceptional member experience for all in small to mid-sized centers. This position is responsible for managing the wellness-related financials, relationship building, supervision of staff, volunteer development and for being a YMCA advocate in the community. A strong focus is placed on driving a superior member experience, enhancing the membership connection/engagement, thereby leading to increasing member satisfaction and retention. This position employs a continuous improvement model to meet and/or exceed goals for satisfaction, budgeted revenue/expense goals.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in exercise science or related field; or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in wellness programming, with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Current certification from a national accredited organization in personal training, group exercise or similar discipline.
  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen Administration.
  • Must understand how to build relationships and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Have the ability to lead a strong staff team that is focused on creating a welcoming environment and providing a superior member experience for all members, at all times.
  • Must have a proven track record and a passion for exercise, nutrition, healthy living and helping others live a healthier lifestyle. Additional skills in developing small groups, personal training, and group exercise are needed.
  • Highly motivated with the consistent ability to meet/exceed goals.
  • Self-driven with the ability to set effective team and individual goals and take ownership for results.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and adapt to changing contexts and priorities.
  • Ability to understand, adapt to and interact with diverse people, teams, perspectives and cultures.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with fitness apps, program registration platforms, scheduling systems, and performance tracking tools.
  • Experience in development and implementation of a robust and sustainable balanced group fitness schedule that meets member needs.
  • Leads by example through direct program delivery by either:
  • Personally training up to two (2) clients, or
  • Leading a minimum of three (3) group fitness classes per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Les Mills Group Fitness Certification in any program format or completion of Les Mills Group Fitness Management Program.
  • Specialty Certifications:        Health Coach, Weight Management, Injury Recovery and Prevention, Youth Programming etc…
  • Knowledge of Aqua Fitness programming
  • Knowledge of chronic disease prevention and healthy lifestyle programs such as Livestrong at the Y, Enhance Fitness, and Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring or other healthy lifestyle programs aligned with the YMCA mission.
  • Technical proficiency with Financial, Payroll, and Budgeting systems and tools

Responsibilities

  • Focus on program growth and quality including, best practices and the elevation of wellness programming. This includes personal training, group training, group exercise, healthy living programs, youth conditioning programs, and direct leadership to wellness floor staff members.
  • Maintain and develop program budgets, curriculums, staffing, and plans including but not limited to personal training, group fitness, offsite programming, and special interest or mission-based programming.
  • Actively manage equipment, contracted service workers, cleanliness and safety of the wellness center.
  • Provides leadership to wellness center operations and administration to ensure a best-in-class membership experience.
  • Increases member connection and commitment to YMCA programs and services ensuring the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned to YMCA goals including:
  • Reviews data and listens to member feedback about satisfaction and interests to ensure connection to programs, services, and other members.
  • Collaborates regularly with center leadership, program operations, and other related teams to ensure the member experience is consistent, integrated and aligned with member needs.
  • Collaborates with community partners to design and deliver engaging, inclusive wellness programs.
  • Ensures all YMCA of Greater Hartford wellness standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations, and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensures all wellness staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
  • Ensures adherence to all YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff.
  • Direct responsibility to hire, develop, motivate and retain a team of wellness staff members committed to the YMCA’s mission.
  • All other related duties as assigned.
