About The Position

The role of Welding Process Engineer is to support the welding and manufacturing activities in processing materials or manufacturing products in an industrial large diameter spiral weld pipe and steel fabrication organization by performing the following duties personally or with manufacturing personnel in a combined team approach. This position will be a member of the Great Lakes Operation Team and will be permanently located in Flint, MI, but may involve occasional travel to other plant locations in Columbia, SC, Houston, TX or Paris, TX. This position will assist: in defining best welding practices, including researching and evaluating associated equipment. department managers with developing and training those best practices on the weld equipment. in all welding activities, including but not limited to, developing best practices for cutting, fitting, and welding techniques and researching and evaluating associated equipment for capital procurement to achieve best in class steel fabrication. in troubleshooting welding problems and other technical problems in the manufacturing process, as well as developing new procedures and techniques to improve welding quality and speed. Reviews specification boundaries with department leaders to ascertain product welding requirements and ensures weld processes are created and approved to meet the defined requirements. Monitors and assists with welding related processes to ensure production and quality of products meet specifications. Monitors welding machines and equipment to ensure specific and maximum operational performance, as well as optimum utilization. Supports welding operators as needed to ensure adequate quality, productivity and knowledge. Develop or revise standard welding practices and observe welders to ensure compliance with standards. Resolves welding issues independently or as part of a team to improve processes or bring processes into compliance with governing codes, standards and specifications. Compiles, stores, retrieves and analyzes appropriate welding data. Works with Quality Assurance and production to develop and/or revise weld procedures. Works with Quality Assurance and production to develop and maintain the usage/revision of weld procedures. Works with Plant Maintenance personnel to understand PLC programming as it pertains to welding engineering and participates in the maintenance and development of all weld-related PLC code. Works with Division Engineering to ensure compliance with Division Engineering standards.

  • Must have the ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with welding codes preferred: ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, AWS B2.1, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing software; spreadsheet software and word processing software, design software including AutoCAD® and SOLIDWORKS® preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding processes; experience as a welder or desire to gain experience as a welder preferred.
