About The Position

The general purpose of this position is to weld simple to complex components and/or structures while meeting all safety, quality, and schedule requirements. Responsible for various types of weld preparation, welding, and weld finishing operations to accomplish welding in accordance with customer drawings and specifications.

Requirements

  • Ability to evaluate and correct basic weld pick up, with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in assigned welding techniques
  • Basic knowledge of wire and filler material applications for various steel alloys and aluminum
  • Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.)
  • Must be able to pass vision test and workmanship qualification test.
  • Must be tested and fit for respirator use.
  • Willing to work any shift and overtime as required
  • High school diploma required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in a welding trade is required
  • Ability to read/follow blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to take directions and follow instructions
  • Good mechanical aptitude with ability to produce consistent quality
  • Ability to inspect and correct basic weld pick-up without supervision
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination; good spatial orientation
  • Ability to consistently meet production deadlines
  • Ability to use conventional and precision measuring instruments
  • Ability to pass a skills evaluation test to demonstrate welding ability
  • Ability to weld in uncomfortable positions where applicable
  • Ability to work on beams, scaffolding, ladders and confined spaces.
  • Ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workers
  • Ability to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule

Nice To Haves

  • Shipyard experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Applies appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair parts of metal or other weldable materials.
  • Works from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts or work orders.
  • Welds parts in position for fabrication of vessels, tanks or other structural assemblies.
  • Uses carbon electrodes to cut, shape and groove metal.
  • May prepare workplace for welding by cleaning and/or preheating.
  • Examine weld sizes of weld beads.
  • Working in compliance with all safety, quality, environmental and health requirements.
  • Cleans weld area; sweeps and removes scrap.
  • Other job duties as may be assigned relevant to the trade
