About The Position

The Welder II is responsible for independently performing advanced welding operations using qualified welding procedures to produce high-quality weldments that meet customer, engineering, and regulatory requirements. This position requires a strong understanding of welding theory, blueprint interpretation, weld symbols, heat control, distortion mitigation, and inspection criteria.
The Welder II works with minimal supervision, supports continuous improvement initiatives, assists in troubleshooting welding-related issues, and may provide training and guidance to Welder I employees. Other duties may be assigned, and key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Card Holder.
• Must pass initial and subsequent background checks.
• Must pass preemployment and subsequent drug and alcohol screenings.
• Comply with internal non-disclosure agreement requirements.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language.
• Strong math skills including measurement conversion, fractions, and decimals.
• Maintain Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “Employee Possessor” eligibility.
• High School Diploma or GED required; Technical or Trade School Certificate preferred.
• Minimum of 2–4 years of professional welding experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
• Intermediate computer literacy.
• Must pass internal weld certification(s) for applicable processes and positions.
• Demonstrate proficiency in GTAW and GMAW including multi-position welding.
• Working knowledge of welding equipment including: Power sources and parameter adjustment Filler metals and electrode selection Shielding gas systems and regulators Welding fixtures and clamps Inspection tools and measuring instruments

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience in a regulated manufacturing environment (defense, aerospace, or similar).
• Experience working to formal Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
• Experience mentoring or training junior welders.

Responsibilities

• Safely perform GMAW and GTAW welding on steel, aluminum, and other qualified materials in accordance with approved procedures.
• Set up, adjust, and optimize welding parameters including voltage, amperage, wire feed speed, shielding gas flow, and travel speed.
• Read and interpret complex blueprints, weld symbols (per AWS A2.4), and technical drawings to determine welding sequence and requirements.
• Perform welds in multiple positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) as required.
• Control heat input and distortion through proper technique and sequencing.
• Perform fit-up, joint preparation, and alignment of components prior to welding.
• Deburr and inspect weldments prior to inspection
• Ensure weldments meet customer specifications and internal quality standards.
• Safely meet or exceed established labor efficiency and production goals such as throughput, scrap reduction, and first-pass yield.
• Identify weld discontinuities and determine root causes (e.g., porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, cracking, distortion).
• Perform in-process and final visual weld inspections to applicable acceptance criteria.
• Utilize precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and weld inspection tools.
• Support corrective action efforts related to weld defects and quality escapes.
• Assist in qualifying and validating new weld procedures when required.
• Ensure compliance with internal quality systems and applicable government standards.
• Ensure a 2% or less overall non-conforming parts / scrap rate is maintained by the packaging team
• Maintain traceability of work product
• Perform inspections using applicable tools and equipment
• Maintain cleanliness, verify calibration, and proactively identify wear of inspection tooling
• Ensure that all products meet quality standards and report potential non-conformances
• Identify, mark, and segregate non-conforming material and product
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance production efficiency, quality, and safety
• Accurately document work performed, time tracking, and material usage.
• Record inspection results and rework activities.
• Report production delays, safety hazards, equipment issues, or material shortages to supervision in a timely manner.
• Provide feedback on workflow and production bottlenecks.
• Actively participate in Lean and 5S initiatives.
• Recommend process improvements to increase welding efficiency, reduce scrap, and improve quality.
• Assist in developing standardized work instructions and best practices.
• Support cross-training initiatives within the department.
• Wear appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, or respirators, as required by the specific job and work environment
• Strictly adhere to all company-specific safety procedures, legal regulatory requirements, and established emergency response plans
• Ability to identify potential hazards, report unsafe practices or conditions, and suggest safer alternatives
• Perform routine inspection and intermediate-level maintenance of welding equipment.
• Identify and report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs as needed.
• Ensure proper storage and handling of filler metals and shielding gases.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Strictly adhere to all PPE and safety requirements, including hot work protocols.
