Job Summary Welds all types of commonly used metals and alloys of various sizes, shapes and thicknesses, including dissimilar metals such as copper to steel | Operates various hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering or brazing equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations or seams of fabricated metal products | May set up, operate and/or tend to robots that weld, braze, solder or heat treat metal products, components or assemblies Impact of the Role General Profile Requires basic skills in an analytical or scientific method or operational process Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures and/or scientific methods and adheres to quality guidelines Works with close supervision Performs manual tasks according to established procedures Essential Functions Joins, fabricates, and repairs metal parts and other weldable material to form permanent bonds by applying appropriate welding techniques. Prepares the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. Welds metal components and parts using specialized equipment such as gas welders and gas torches. Uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals. Plans work by interpreting blueprints, specifications, diagrams, or schematics. Observes tests on welded surfaces to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications. Required Qualifications Required education and experience: Vocational/Technical Training Degree and 1-2 years' experience OR Equivalent Combination of Relevant Education &/or Experience Preferred Qualifications Preferred education and experience: Associate's Degree Discipline/Major: Technical degree or equivalent training and experience Knowledge, skills & abilities: Technical expertise. Planning skills. Detail oriented. Manual dexterity. Welding. Inspection. Safety procedures. Reading blueprints/diagrams. Physical Requirements Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities. Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds. May need to stand for long periods of time. Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery. May be requested to work a different shift. Must be willing to work outside normal business hours as required. This position is Safety-Sensitive.
