About The Position

In this position you will perform skilled work in fabrication and maintenance/repair welding for the City of Minneapolis Fleet Services Division. This position will work on a variety of heavy equipment including but not limited to City Fire and Police vehicles, heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, Solid Waste and Recycling equipment, and other light duty vehicles. First Shift: Monday - Friday 6:00am to 2:30pm.

Requirements

  • Vocational school training in heating, welding and cutting metal as well as shaping and tempering iron and steel or metal fabrication or equivalent.
  • Two years of verifiable experience performing welding and fabrication or equivalent.
  • Experience with oxygen-fueled welding and cutting.
  • Experience with shielded metal arc welding (SMAW-stick).
  • Experience with gas metal arc welding (GMAW-MIG).
  • Experience with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW-TIG).
  • Experience with various fabrication processes as needed to repair damaged City equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • A Certified Welder Certificate received from American Welding Society or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of welding, design drawing, print reading, and metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of automotive vehicles, medium and heavy duty trucks, and construction equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and structural problems and make appropriate repairs.
  • Good communication, mathematical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience developing welding plans and drawings and working from them.
  • Experience analyzing machine stress, metal stress, fatigue, and fabricating, assembling and welding appropriate reinforcement.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and safety precautions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with modern office software.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and safely operate welding and metal cutting equipment.
  • Perform various welding repairs on City equipment and vehicles.
  • Welding includes: aluminum, stainless steel and steel materials together as specified by layout, diagram, work order, or specific customer instructions.
  • Distinguish types of metals involved as well as metal thickness, temperature of weld, and perform appropriate welding procedures based on materials involved.
  • Develop and execute fabrication plans and drawings and perform job planning and layout work.
  • Form and/or fabricate specialized pieces for installation and welding.
  • Perform maintenance work on the welding shop equipment.
