JOB SUMMARY: A Second-Class Welder is a skilled tradesperson with approximately 2–3 years of experience welding metal components and structures. This position requires adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to work extended hours on short notice. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: CRAFT Perform grinding operations as needed for production welds. Collaborate effectively with other trades to complete assigned work. Assist in line pulling and setup under supervisor direction. Maintain strict adherence to jobsite cleanliness standards. Demonstrate initiative and promptly report any work stoppages to supervision. Apply workmanship training to identify and correct weld defects prior to visual testing (VT). Exhibit proficiency in three (3) of the following welding processes. Qualified Welding Processes (All Positions): Process Base Metals SMAW CS, CRES, HY FCAW CS, HSLA, HY GMAW AL 5XXX GMAW-P AL 6XXX GTAW CS, CRES, AL, CuNi to Cu & CS (socket and open butt) Stud CS, CRES TOOL Advanced use of power tools (grinders, needle guns, burr motors, etc.) Uses weld gauges to check for over/under weld Correct set up of tools prior to use (heat, wire speed, tagging lines, drop tests, etc.) Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points) Advanced in maintenance for welding machines (replacing tips, gas diffusers, liners, etc.) Diagnoses and repairs complex issues with welding equipment PROCEDURAL Understands fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning firewatches, 35’ rule, etc.) Practical knowledge of industry safety standards/training Understands and adheres to preheat and interpass requirements Reads weld symbols Requires periodic supervision to accomplish work
