About The Position

We are seeking a qualified Weld Engineer to support a high-profile Remnant Removal Project at the Savannah River Site. This position focuses on the removal and repair of remnant steel from cast-in-place embeds and post-installed plates (PIPs) in Building 226-F, while ensuring strict compliance with NQA-1 standards, ASME and AWS welding codes, and project-specific quality requirements. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that any damage to Safety Class (SC) or Safety Significant (SS) steel during removal activities is properly assessed, repaired, and fully documented to meet federal and client expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of welding engineering experience in structural steel, nuclear, or federal construction environments.
  • Proficiency with NQA-1, ASME, and AWS welding codes and standards.
  • Experience supporting work on SC/SS systems, including interpretation of base metal repair criteria.
  • Familiarity with welding inspections and coordination of NDE activities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain site access and security clearance, if required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) - Current or prior certification.
  • Experience working on DOE or DoD project sites.
  • Knowledge of structural failure assessment, root cause analysis, and repair planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site technical welding support for the removal of ~16,125 embedded steel remnants.
  • Review and approve Work Packages (approximately 29 total) involving welding, grinding, or cutting activities.
  • Develop and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) in accordance with ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, and project-specific codes.
  • Assess field damage and determine when base metal repairs are required due to exceeding 1/32" material loss.
  • Oversee welding repairs to SC/SS components ensuring full NQA-1 traceability and compliance.
  • Coordinate with QA and NDE technicians for inspections and acceptance criteria, including UT, MT, and PT methods.
  • Participate in field walkdowns, inspection activities, and resolution of weld-related NCRs/CARs.
  • Ensure welding activities adhere to all applicable safety, code, and quality specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineering, field supervisors, QA personnel, and client representatives to ensure technical alignment.
