About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The WNC Agricultural Center is a self-supporting, multi-use complex that operates 364 days per year. The primary purpose of the facility is to serve the horse/ livestock and trade show industries and meet the needs of both the agricultural and non-agricultural community by providing and maintaining buildings and grounds capable of hosting equine events, tradeshows, conventions, seminars, community events and public expos as well as carrying out all activities of the annual North Carolina Mountain State Fair. The North Carolina Mountain State Fair serves the agricultural, manufacturing, commercial, educational, governmental and other agencies across the State and its visitors. This position will serve as the Weekend Maintenance Coordinator. The individual in this position will interact with the facility’s management, show promoters, and exhibitors to accomplish the objectives of the complex and each event.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of construction trades (i.e. electrical, plumbing, and carpentry)
  • Ability to operate various Ag. Center equipment (i.e. tractor, trash truck, mowers, etc.)
  • Ability to install and troubleshoot public address systems and audio/visual equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written form with supervisor, coworkers, vendors, and public.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate event activities with management, staff and vendors/event promoters
  • Prepare event space to include riding rings (dragging, watering, delivering equine props, installing PA and audio/visual equipment)
  • Opening and closing of facility buildings
  • Maintain required records, billing, collect fees
  • Ensure cleanliness of facilities and grounds
  • Basic electrical and plumbing repairs
  • basic carpentry projects
