The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. About the Role, Mission or Department Overview The Weekend Editor plays a central role in shaping the Metro desk's 24/7 report, driving coverage of the biggest storylines through the weekend. By working closely with both the News desk and Metro leadership, this editor ensures that the desk is running on all cylinders, from big breaking news to enterprise and feature stories. Experience managing reporters is essential, as is a demonstrated ability to make crucial news judgements under pressure. This role is decisive in breaking news situations, and you should be comfortable both working independently and collaboratively in service of the report. You are also comfortable going deep into copy, being the last set of eyes on a story before publication and proficient in all aspects of digital production. You will work with the desk head and other assigning editors, and guide your reporters through ambitious enterprise along with emergent news. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
