About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Watershed Maintainers within the Drinking Water Operations Directorate, for a position located in Grahamsville, New York. The Bureau of Water Supply, Drinking Water Operations Directorate, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of reservoirs, dams, water and wastewater treatment facilities, aqueducts, shafts, hydroelectric facilities, highways, bridges, and watershed lands across the Delaware, Catskill, and Croton Water Systems. They are also responsible for water quality field and lab operations throughout the watershed and within city limits. The directorate plays a critical role in ensuring the Bureau of Water Supply meets its mission of reliably delivering a sufficient quantity of high quality drinking water to protect public health and quality of life to approximately 9.5 million people in NYC and the surrounding upstate communities. The Water Operations North Division is responsible for managing all aspects of the operations of the Catskill and Delaware Watersheds. This includes planning, management, operation, maintenance, and stewardship of all NYC water supply infrastructure within these watersheds. Division leadership is tasked with cultivating a highly capable, well trained, motivated, and adaptable workforce to meet both current and future operational needs. Additionally, the division supports other DEP units working within its jurisdiction and coordinates with local governments, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to promote effective collaboration during both routine and emergency operations. Under the supervision of the Supervisor (Watershed Maintenance) I, the Watershed Maintainer, will be responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of facilities, equipment, and lands within the watershed areas serving the reservoirs, aqueducts, and related infrastructure of New York City’s water supply system.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas, reservoirs, or aqueduct systems, or performing duties involving the upkeep, inspection, maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:
  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as: a mechanic, journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.
  • All candidates must have a Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Candidate must possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of New York, however, a Class A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred. The Commercial Driver’s License must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • All candidates may be required to obtain a NYSDOH Water Plant Operator Grade C certification at the time of hire or within 2 years of hire. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • All candidates may be required to obtain a NYSDEC Pesticide Applicator Certification within 2 years of City Start Date. This certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performing maintenance and repairs on facilities, lands, roads, bridges, dams, and other structures using hand tools, power tools, machine tools, and industrial equipment such as snowplows, graders, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Maintaining accurate paper and electronic records of operations, equipment performance, maintenance activities, and water quality data; utilizing computers and electronic devices for communication and documentation.
  • Conducting road repairs, mowing lawns, road shoulders, and dam embankments, and operating necessary machinery to support these tasks.
  • Painting buildings, structures, and equipment; performing basic carpentry tasks as needed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of marginal areas surrounding reservoirs, facilities, and other watershed locations.
  • Assisting skilled tradespeople in the execution of specialized maintenance and repair
  • Complying with all environmental, health and safety laws, agency policies, rules and regulations
