About The Position

Under general supervision, completes work that involves the general operation of dam facilities and appurtenances; monitoring of watershed lands and reservoir properties, aqueducts, and facilities; patrols to prevent pollution or trespassing on Watershed lands, water supplies, and various rights-of-way; responds to various emergency situations; takes preventative measures to reduce risk of emergency actions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
  • Two (2) years of verifiable work experience performing duties which involve protection, conservation, operation, natural resource management, and/or maintenance/development of watersheds, reservoirs, and/or forestry.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate the various machinery of our dams related to flow of water to and from reservoirs, such as pipelines, flumes, spillways, sluice gates, and valves. In the event of emergencies can independently take action to avoid damage to dams, valves, facilities, and environmental resources.
  • Reads and records data on indicating meters, recording instruments and charts to determine water levels, water releases, water flow rates, and weather station readings, including temperature, precipitation, and other variables; keeps records of unusual incidents, conditions, improvement projects, and work performed.
  • Patrols lakes and reservoirs by boat to inspect water conditions and take samples.
  • Locate, report, and assist in emergencies such as wildfires, vehicle accidents, and search and rescue operations on watershed lands.
  • Patrols and inspect rights-of-way, watershed and reservoir areas; removes debris; reports garbage dumpers and trespassers; maintains watersheds, and reservoirs to ensure a high-quality water yield for public consumption; maintains/patrols access trails, roads, and performs general labor to assist in Watershed maintenance.
  • Escorts SFPUC staff, government agency staff, contractors and tour groups in dams, watersheds and on reservoirs;
  • Perform dam, penstock, pipeline and other facility inspections, collect water samples, and assist trades in preventative maintenance of valves, slide gates, and other assets.
  • Driving trucks on rough roads in inclement weather; operate snow cats; connect, haul, and back up boat trailers; engage four-wheel drive and apply snow chains when necessary.
