About The Position

The Water Worker I Apprentice position with the City of Evanston is an entry-level manual labor apprenticeship program that provides on-the-job training for individuals interested in working in the municipal water distribution and sewer conveyance systems, as well as in the water treatment plant. This role involves a variety of tasks aimed at maintaining and repairing essential water and sewer infrastructure. Apprentices will learn to detect water and sewer line leaks, perform maintenance and repairs on the water and sewer systems, and assist in the upkeep of other related facilities. Safety is a priority, and apprentices are required to wear appropriate safety equipment, including hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, gloves, and steel-toed shoes. It is important to note that participation in the apprenticeship program does not guarantee future employment, and the program is limited to a maximum duration of two years, contingent upon the availability of City funding. As part of the apprenticeship, individuals will engage in various essential functions, including assisting in the repair of water mains, service lines, valves, and fire hydrants using both hand and power tools. They will also help with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the municipal sewer conveyance system, which includes pipelines, manholes, and catch basins. Other responsibilities may include digging ditches and holes, repairing and restoring streets, sidewalks, alleys, and parkways, and working with a crew to make point repairs on collapsed sewer mains. Apprentices will be involved in inspecting manholes, cleaning and repairing inlets and catch basins, and performing excavation work as needed. The role also requires operating and maintaining heavy equipment and power tools, as well as assisting mechanics with repairs to pumps and small engines. Overall, this apprenticeship offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of public works, with a focus on practical skills and safety protocols.
