About The Position

WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM OPERATOR IN TRAINING (OIT) / FIELD TECHNICIAN Broadbent & Associates, Inc. of Reno, NV is seeking a motivated and dependable Water Treatment System Operator in Training (OIT)/Field Technician to support the operation of two water treatment systems. The project is located at Leviathan Mine (~6,900 feet) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Alpine County, CA. This role is well-suited for individuals looking to start or grow a career in water treatment and environmental remediation , with training and mentorship provided. This is a seasonal field position with year-round employment. The primary operations field season is April through November. Office support (Reno office) is necessary December through March. Training will be provided prior to work on site. Candidate will need to be based out of the Minden/Gardnerville, NV area, as the project site is located southwest of the Carson Valley. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM OPERATOR In this role, you will help support the operation of two water treatment systems, including a high-density sludge (HDS) treatment plant and a sulfate-reducing bioreactor. These systems treat acid rock drainage (ARD) from groundwater seeps and surface water sources. You will work alongside experienced staff and receive training to build your technical and operational skills over time. Candidates will work full time on site during the field season, with off-season office support and monthly site visits during the winter. Operators complete daily remote monitoring of the systems on a rotating weekend schedule.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Zero to one year of environmental-related, water treatment, industrial operations, aquarium and/or aquaculture work experience
  • Ability to work outdoors, traverse moderate terrain and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Willingness to learn mechanical, technical, and monitoring systems
  • Ability to follow procedures, document work accurately, and prioritize safety
  • Self-starter, quick learner and effective communication skills
  • Ability to travel with valid driver's license and ability to be insured by our commercial insurance
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in water treatment, environmental science, or environmental remediation
  • Comfort working outdoors and at remote field sites
  • Basic mechanical aptitude or hands-on experience (school, work, military, or personal projects all count)
  • Strong communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
  • Prior experience in water or wastewater treatment, environmental fieldwork, or industrial operations
  • Water and/or Wastewater Treatment Operator certification
  • HAZWOPER certification
  • Familiarity with pumps, piping, valves, or sampling equipment
  • Associate's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science

Responsibilities

  • Completing required safety and operator training
  • Assisting with daily operational documentation and logs
  • Supporting system operations, monitoring, and optimization (including remote monitoring)
  • Performing routine system inspections and maintenance tasks
  • Measuring field parameters and collecting water samples
  • Assisting with troubleshooting and minor repairs under guidance
  • Supporting chemical, fuel, and material deliveries
  • Maintaining safety, field, and compliance records
  • Supporting preparation of operational status updates and reports
  • Promoting a strong safety culture and environmental stewardship
