About The Position

The position involves assisting and participating in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Class IV and lower classed water treatment plants, while independently operating, maintaining, and repairing a Class II Water Treatment Plant. The role includes conducting various tests and analyses of water samples, interpreting findings, and making necessary adjustments to treatment processes. The position is located within the Department of Water Supply - Operations Division in S. Kohala, with one immediate permanent full-time vacancy available. Special working conditions require availability for stand-by duty and emergency calls during non-working hours, as well as the ability to work overtime as needed. The selected candidate will receive a shortage differential of $400.00 per month in addition to the starting salary. The eligible list may also be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a current Hawai'i Mandatory Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate (Grade II or higher).
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or comparable driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and participate in the operation and maintenance of a Class IV and lower classed water treatment plant.
  • Conduct periodic operating checks of plant equipment.
  • Start-up, shut-down, and conduct timely backwash of filters.
  • Calibrate, test, repair, program, and overhaul chemical pumps and other equipment.
  • Assist in the inspection, maintenance, and installation of plant equipment and systems.
  • Monitor plant status by interpreting readings from gauges, charts, and meters.
  • Run jar tests to determine dose requirements.
  • Collect water samples and perform laboratory tests to determine quality.
  • Assist in loading and unloading chemicals.
  • Maintain plant records including operating logs and laboratory results.
  • Operate SCADA system equipment to check water system levels.
  • Ensure compliance with State DOH and Federal Safe Drinking Water Act laws.
  • Perform general grounds and building maintenance work.
  • Attend training seminars and workshops.
  • Clean and maintain intakes, reservoirs, and filters.
  • May perform shift work under supervision for training.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to transport personnel and equipment.
